Robert Taira Wilson

Acoustic / Alternative / Folk / Pop / Singer

Hailing originally from London in the United Kingdom, singer-songwriter Robert Taira Wilson is currently based in Tokyo.

Since picking up his first guitar from the tender age of 7, the past ten years have seen his musical reach extend across Europe to Asia and continue to expand globally.

The unique nature of Robert Taira Wilson's style makes his music almost impossible to pigeon-hole. Neither purely folk nor jazz, classical, rock, pop or alternative. Nonetheless, he draws inspiration from all of these styles to weave together something truely original, profoundly impactful, yet also deeply visceral and personal.

As a result Robert Taira Wilson has mastered a truly original guitar style, effortlessly blending dexterous guitar-picking techniques across both chord strum and open string play. This innate ability allows him to simultaneously occupy all lead, rhythm, bass, and percussion parts symbiotically, to create a truly robust soundscape that is orchestral in its impact.

London CD Release: Cold In The Heat

Cold In The Heat contains 6 brand new songs and features collaborations with several London based musicians. This record marks a significant shift in the style of my music with a greater focus on instrumentation and more complex arrangements with strings, double bass, percussion, backing vocals, harp and electric guitar. Prior to 2015 I'd been living in Japan for three years. I came back to London alone to pursue my music and the experience of living away from my family and friends greatly influenced my writing. The themes of isolation and separation feature heavily in the songs. I released the new EP at the National Portrait Gallery in London on August 18th 2017.

Out At Sea is inspired by my fading impressions of my earliest childhood memory. I remember being woken in the middle of the night by my dad and taken to the window to watch the snow fall in the street outside. This memory has no sound, no movement and no colour. I cannot be sure that it is a true memeory or a fabrication. Maybe it's several different memories patched together to form one. Memories are fluid, everchanging and fading. Like water they flow and wash away and our bodies are like shipwrecks in that they can resist the tides for only so long.
